20 years at Blackfriars!

Thu 25th Nov

It’s 20 years since we opened the doors at Blackfriars!
In the summer of 2001, Sam walked past the restaurant (then called Eclectic and run by the City Council) and noticed that it looked quiet and so decided to phone the council to make some enquires. She found out that the lease was indeed available. We already had one restaurant at the time called Sidneys in Tynemouth, so decided to submit our application.. the rest is history!
From humble beginnings where we had no customers on day one (wondering what have we done?!), with the help of an amazing team, we have become one of the leading restaurants the region, receiving many high profile accolades including the Taste of the North East award (twice) plus top culinary recommendations.
As well as continuing to serve fantastic local, seasonal and gutsy food created by our talented chefs in the restaurant, we are also proud to have opened our Cookery School, Banquet Hall, Tasting Room and Parlour Bar and now stage hundreds of events each year from cookery classes and wine tastings to weddings and banquets.
Over the years, Andy's passion for medieval hospitality and history has grown, and we feel honoured to be custodians of Blackfriars which has significant historic importance in Newcastle. We also have plans to invest and grow into the complex in the coming year, so watch this space!
We’d like to thank our wonderful staff, past and present, for all their hard work and determination in making Blackfriars what it is today and for all our customers who have supported us. We’ve even survived a pandemic!

We look forward to serving you in the future.

Andy and Sam x
