Eat Medieval Summer School

Monday 12th - Saturday 17th September

Join us for an in-person late summer cookery course exploring the intriguing world of medieval food with 5 days of cooking fun in the medieval buildings of the former 13th century Dominican Priory from 12th-17th September, and hosted by Blackfriars Restaurant in Newcastle and Durham University. We'll also explore some of rich medieval heritage of the North-East of England with a visit to Raby Castle, which has one of the best-preserved medieval kitchens, and Holy Island, Lindisfarne – the site of St Cuthbert’s monastery.
The six day course includes five practical cookery workshops which will take you through some of the major traditions of medieval European cooking: from England, to France, Germany, Denmark, and Catalunya. In addition, we’ll have academic insight into the recipe collections and historical contexts from Professor Giles Gasper and his team from Durham University in three classroom sessions. The course will enhance your knowledge of medieval food culture; medieval sources; medieval and modern culinary practice; menu planning and commercial cooking together with some transferrable skills in time and people management. The week will build-up to a medieval banquet meal on the Friday. 
Please note we are only asking for a deposit to secure your place at this time. The total cost will be £995 with the balance required three months before the start of the course. The cost includes the practical cookery workshops, class-based learning sessions, refreshments, four lunches and two dinners (allowing for free time) and field trip transport and venue entry costs as well as the medieval banquet. It does not include meals not provided, general day-today living expenses or flights and accommodation which should be arranged privately; recommendations can be provided on request. A payment plan can be agreed on request. An initial 12 places will be made available: so please book early!

Wednesday 14th: morning visit Raby Castle, lunch at own cost, visit to Durham including cathedral, castle and library, dinner at Dobson & Parnell
Thursday 15th: morning practical cooking, lunch, afternoon learning session, tour of Newcastle's Castle Keep, dinner at own cost
Friday 16th: morning practical cooking, lunch, afternoon practical cooking, medieval banquet at Blackfriars
Saturday 17th: morning visit to Lindisfarne Gospels (ticket availability-depending), afternoon visit to Lindisfarne Island (tides-depending), lunch and dinner at own cost.

he deposit must be paid to secure a booking. Any subsequent payments towards the final cost of £995 per person must be paid on demand. All amounts paid towards the final cost are non-refundable or transferable. If the course is cancelled for any reason, all monies paid will be returned. No additional compensation will be paid in lieu of participants personal costs. Please inform us of any allergies or dietary preferences when booking.
