Major Re-brands and Refurbishments
Sidney’s Restaurant in Tynemouth has just re-opened after a major refurbishment. North Tyneside’s most awarded restaurant now boasts a walnutesq floor, soft chocolate leather seating together with aubergine and cream walls. Sidney’s owner, Andy Hook, explained ‘we wanted to lighten up the dining rooms whilst creating a warm, cosy and luxurious feel’.

The food will also change with an emphasis on simple but delicious bistro dishes made from ultra-fresh, local and seasonal produce such as Langoustine risotto with yellow cherry tomatoes and saffron, Corn-fed chicken with confit garlic, spinach, potatoes and bacon, North Sea halibut with pancetta, wild mushrooms &sautéed potatoes and Local cheeses with grapes and home-made chutney.
It’s all change too at Sidney’s sister eaterie in Newcastle with the 800 year old dining room changing from ‘Blackfriars Café Bar’ to ‘Blackfriars Restaurant’ to reflect the ‘seriously good food’ currently being produced.
Again, the emphasis is very much on elegant modern-British food using local and seasonal produce such as Pan-flashed scallops with asparagus wrapped in Parma ham, Char-grilled fillet with goats cheese, French black pudding & fresh chips and Pistachio chocolate mousse cake with mango & rose ice cream

Italian Super-Tuscan Wine Tasting
Blackfriars Restaurant launches an evening tasting of Super-Tuscan Wines in conjunction with Slow Food Newcastle with guest speaker Pierre Lacroix.
Tuscany is Renaissance country - the towns, the villages, the terracotta-roofed houses and the hummock hills have changed little since the days when Leonardo da Vinci painted them. But this is also the heart of the renaissance of Italian Wine. The term ‘Super Tuscan’ came about when innovative and dynamic wine makers flouted anarchic Italian wine laws by adding their own grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, to the humble Sangiovese grape to produce some of the finest reds on the planet.
The evening takes place at 7pm on Wednesday 30 November at Blackfriars Restaurant at a cost, including a tutored wine tasting and convivial 3 course meal, of just £25 (with £3 going to Slow Food Newcastle).
Ex-Sidney’s turns to Deli
Ex-Sidney’s manageress, Sue Plevey, has hopped off just 100 yards down the road to open her own place – ‘Deli around the corner’. The small but well-stocked ex-barber shop on Hotspur street in Tynemouth is decked out in olive green and creams and can be found by following the constant queue it seems to always have stretching right out of the shop
