Blackfriars’ Tsunami Night raises £2,800

Blackfriars Café Bar is delighted to announce the raising of £2,800 at its Pan-Asian Tsunami Night last Wednesday 26 January in aid of the Boxing Day earthquake victims.

All the staff on the night volunteered to work for free which enabled 100% of the £30 ticket price to be donated to charity.

The meal included ‘hot-fire’ Morning Glory broth with udon noodles, roast chicken curry steamed in banana leaves and sweet banana with coconut custard.

Owner, Andy Hook, said ‘I am absolutely overwhelmed by the generosity showed by everyone involved and staggered we managed to raise so much money’.

In addition to the money raised from the meal, a fantastic selection of gifts were also donated for a raffle and auction, including a pamper day at Matfen Hall, kart racing tickets, a personal guided tour of Northumberland and a 2 month pass for the Tyneside Cinema.

The money will be given to the Journal for their UNICEF fund.

Blackfriars website on course for 25,000 hits!

Blackfriars Café Bar’s new website has notched up a staggering 2,000 unique visits in it’s first month of operating – far more than expected.

Mike Owen, MD of onebestway design, who built the site was flabbergasted, saying ‘2,000 unique visits equates to over 20,000 conventional hits which means Blackfriars is on target for 25,000 visits, or over ¼ million hits this year!’

Sidney’s & Blackfriars, first for non-smoking

Three years on and it seems like every establishment has wished they were first.

Sidney’s first banned smoking in it’s restaurant in early 2002 with Blackfriars Café Bar following suit shortly afterwards, which according to owner, Andy Hook, makes them the first restaurant group in the north east to ban smoking.

And it seems like it was a good idea. ‘The staff and customers all seem really happy with the decision. We now have a cleaner working environment where no one is forced to breath in second hand smoke’.

What you didn’t know about Chicory

Chicory is a member of the lettuce family. It comes in red and white varieties and is available during the winter months. Chicory is propagated by growing the roots in warm, moist peat or sand and leaving the white, fleshy leaves to develop in darkness. Once picked and exposed to light, the leaves start to become bitter, so they should be stored wrapped in paper to keep out the light and eaten as soon after picking as possible.

Chicory can be eaten raw or cooked: the leaves are excellent eaten fresh in a salad, tossed in a little vinaigrette, or stir-fried and served as a vegetable side dish or simply as a dish on its own. Whole heads of chicory can be baked, poached or griddled and served with pheasant, chicken or bacon.

Which leads us neatly on to this month’s recipe: Baked cod with braised chicory with butter roasted potatoes and rocket pesto..
