What’s On at Blackfriars

Valentine's Night

Blackfriars Valentines Feast
Thursday 14 February 2008 - £49.50 for glass Champagne, 4 courses, coffee & chocolates.

Whether you believe the legend about the Roman priest, named Valentine, who defied Emperor Claudius’ decree by continuing to marry young lovers, or that Valentine was a prison inmate who fell in love with the jailer’s daughter, there is no doubt that 14 February is now regarded as the romantic day of the modern calendar.

So to help you celebrate, we have devised a menu that might get those romantic juices flowing!

St Patrick's Night

Monday 17 March 2008
£35 per person for 3 courses, Black Velvet and Irish coffee.

Saint Patrick was kidnapped at the age of 16 by pirates and sold into slavery where during his 6-year captivity he found strength in his religious faith.

After he escaped he studied religion in Europe then travelled to Ireland to spread the Christian word there. He used the shamrock which resembles a three leaf clover as a metaphor to explain the concept of the trinity - father, son and Holy Spirit.

Legend has it that Saint Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland when they all went out to sea and drowned. We don’t know why he did this except the snake was a revered pagan symbol and perhaps this was a figurative tale alluding to the fact that he drove paganism out of Ireland.

To help you celebrate we’ve come up with a mouth-watering festive feast to pay tribute to all things Irish, so come down to Blackfriars to enjoy a pint of the black stuff and some traditional Irish fayre!

Chocolatier brings a taste of Switzerland to Blackfriars

Blackfriars Gift VouchersA local chocolatier has concocted a collection of hand crafted confectionary exclusively for Blackfriars Restaurant.

We commissioned Jane Williams of Davenport’s Chocolates to carefully create a mouth-watering selection of individual chocolates specifically for use in our petits fours selection which is available with coffee at £2.50. The melt-in-your-mouth honey chocolate is inspired by the mead that was traditionally drunk by monks in the area from 1239, and the rich, dark, coffee flavoured chocolate is perfect as an after dinner treat.

Jane’s passion for chocolate was developed when she spent her childhood in Switzerland and during her year abroad in Austria as part of her degree in German and Geography.

On her return to the UK, Jane trained with the Burger family, master chocolatiers who came to the UK from Switzerland in 1936 and set up Burgers of Marlow in Buckinghamshire.

Now in her own studio in North Shields, Jane takes pride in selecting the best ingredients for her range of home-made chocolates and her exclusive collection for Blackfriars Restaurant is sure to be a big hit!
