Our food is “good, solid and hearty”
Formidable national food critic, Jay Rayner recently reviewed Blackfriars for The Observer newspaper giving the food and service a big thumbs up! He described the food as “good, solid and hearty” and went on to say “the pear & goat’s cheese tartlet was simple and well executed”, as was his warm salad of pig’s cheek and vanilla apple puree.
He also really liked his seared bream with potato and crab cake, his “warm & yeasty [home-made] bread”, his baked custard tart, “I love being reintroduced to childhood pleasures” and said “We made warm, appreciative moaning noises over your dark chocolate cake”! Summing up he described Blackfriars food as “Proper cookery, using solid local ingredients” with “swift, charming, cheerful and diplomatic service”!
Why not book your table now and enjoy some ‘proper cookery’ as Jay puts it, with our hearty food. |

But does our music hit the right note?
Whilst we got top marks for our use of local produce, food critic Rayner criticised our overt playing of local band, Lindisfarne. In fact we support a number of local artists such as Kate Rusby, Rachel Unthank and Jack the lad as well as other favourites like Fotheringay and Bellowhead.
But what would you like to hear us play in the restaurant? Suggested categories might include:
Jazz |
Classical |
Middle of the road eg. Paolo Nutini, Ray LaMontagne & Van Morrison |
Monastic chant |
Continue with our local folk-ish music |
Or play the Sound of Silence (no music) |
You decide! Email your suggestions and we’ll play whichever category wins (and let us know if you have any other suggestions too please!)
